Which Came First? The Camera or the Garden?

For many Creative Types, Nature Lovers and Gardeners ....the camera has become a Permanent Companion..and an extra limb of creative expression.

For some...the camera has always been there.( even before the digital era)....
For others the Garden has been that Direct Arrow that led them to photography.

For some the Digital Era has brought a camera to their life. Or maybe even MORE specific..it has been the world of Blogging that brought them to the fascination of a camera-based life?

What came first for you?... Which passion created the other..what's your story?

What led you to the camera?
Whether that was your garden, blogging..creative pursuits or  a need to document?

...or was photography always an obsession?

Whether you are an amateur or pro..or somewhere inbetween..
...what drives you to photography?

What is your Favorite Subject or Content to photograph?

Do you look at this past-time as a way to record time, to creatively experiment?
.. or to just capture your personal history?

Cameras are a great part of eveyone's lives..I'd love to hear your thoughts..
What led you to the camera..what keeps you interested..what your Favorite Subject or Style is!

For me..I used to be obsessed with only Black and White photography, it took me a long time to convert to digital..I love it now and love to have fun with it. I used to be way more serious in my earlier years and now I just love to capture creative moments.

~My favorite subject is "Light and Shadow" and how it interacts with the content in that moment!
~Nature is my most loved scenery to photograph.
~My style and subject has changed over the years..a natural process as we all shift and grow and change..so does our craft and creativity! I especially love elements of texture, shape and atmosphere.

I created a photo blog "Heart of a Wizardess" to express my more creative side ..so if you ever feel like sharing your creative photos please do, or visiting mine you are welcome to.

Hey Kiki, Beautiful post. I started photographing my garden to document, partly so I could track changes year to year and partly because some aspects are so beautiful but so fleeting it's nice to have a permanent image of them. Then I discovered blogging and the rest is history. I sometimes feel that my garden looks better in images than in real life, it's easy to avoid bug eaten leaves, or plants that aren't thriving, whereas in real life they seem to stand out. Anyhow, it's a lot of fun, encouraging you to check on opening buds and to look at things in a different perspective, and also a pleasure to meet others who share similar visions & appreciations. :)

Wonderful post, Kiki! I'm a long time gardener and flower arranger with a penchant for beauty in all its forms. I'm also a newbie photographer. I picked up the camera to create photos for blogging and discovered the view through the lens excites me. I've grown beyond the garden in the past 10 months and now find photographing everything from grafitti on trains to statuary in cemeteries wildy fascinating.

Your photography, words, and comments have inspired me in so many ways. Thank you.

Your photos are always breathtaking, Kiki. Your early background shows through in the use of light and shadow. As for us, we began taking pictures when our first child was born, lots of them to send to the grandparents. Always family shots, occasionally a garden shot. When my husband gave me a digital camera, in 2002, he said now we could take pictures of the garden and load them onto the computer. What a concept! I went crazy taking shots of everything, for record keeping more than anything. The files of photos led to the blog, to share them. But our skill are lacking, we only know point and shoot and macro, no settings, ever. It is rewarding beyond measure anyway. :-)

Very interesting posting and question Kiki.
I have always loved flowers and a small amount of vegetables. So the garden came first. On an economical level I would have never been able to take all the pictures I wanted in the film era so when the digital cameras came onto the market I was thrilled. Then blogging and garden blogs appeared and it seemed to be just the ideal format to have it all. I also was able to keep a photo record of the garden and plants which has been a wonderful addition to gardening. The digital era has been a wonderful invention for the gardeners.

Kiki as always a lovely and interesting post. I will be back to see your photo blog but for now am sorely behind with blogging friends.

I have always wanted to get into photography more, have taken many snaps of the garden over the years and always been a keen gardener but since going on line two years ago and eventually getting a digital camera things started to slot into place. My blog was just meant to be a visual diary until I met other interesting garden bloggers. Then I had to get a better camera and after many tips from my daughter who did much photography as an art student I have enjoyed learning more and more but still a long way to go.

I decided to buy my daughter the same digital camera as mine I knew how much she would benefit from a good digital camera despite her proclamation that she preferred her non digital camera. My guess paid off and we had a happy christmas day and New year snapping photos and comparing settings followed by e mails with photos exchanged.

A new world has opened to me and the garden, the blogging and the camera are three exciting pastimes now that I am retired and well and can enjoy myself.

This was a great question! For me the garden came first for sure. I've taken pictures of my garden over the years, but really barely knew how to do much other that auto on our old camera. I mostly used it to take pictures of my family. Since blogging I've learned so much about photography and have finally gotten a new camera since then. I'm even getting better at taking pictures of my kids now that I know how to use other settings.

Hi Kiki, your photography is inspiring; I always look forward to your posts. I have enjoyed photography since childhood, but the digital age made it affordable, though I am strictly an amateur there. Gardening came with a house and yard; but one of my earliest, best memories is at age three, wandering in my neighbor Miss Jordan's yard, where gladiolas were taller than me and pansies had the faces of fairies. I discovered writing, another passion, at age eight, and now blogging is where all three have come together.

Laurie said...

Your pictures are always lovely. I'm still in the "auto" stage that Catherine mentioned, but blogging has inspired me to learn more. The garden & the natural world in general inspires me, as it's ever-changing. I sent a link of your previous post to my Mom, whose parents were from Sicily, but she did not know of La Befana. So, thanks for enlightening us!

Hi Kiki,

Well, this is a hard question. I have gardened since I was 8, and loved photography since as long as I can remember so I am not sure which came first. Nature scenes in all of its forms are my favorite subject, I am not so good with pictures of people. I have written software that prints digital pictures, emails pictures, and creates photo pages, so digital photography really intrigues me with its pixels and RGB tones (yes I am a software geek as well as a gardener!). Your pictures are always beautiful, but more importantly they have an artistic quality about them I really like!

Interesting question to ponder...I have always loved photography. I took photo in high school. It was the only class I paid attention in and did well in - and when I skipped, it was to go shoot - unlike when I would skip all my other classes! :) In college, I was the manager of the photography department at my college's Audiovisual center, but the job was practical and not an artistic one (though I had access to the darkroom and free film!) I then fell out of photography for a long while. Fell in love with gardening about 4 years ago, and only started getting back into photography recently. If I may be so bold, I think I have a good eye and know what I'm doing compositionally, but am waaaay behind the eight ball with the technical aspect. I can compose a shot but it will look crappy because I don't really "get" much past the ISO, aperature, etc. I think I need a true course and lots of practice. Thanks for making thing think about this!

Hi, Kiki! I started photographing the garden just to keep a record of what I was doing for my grandfather down in Georgia, since he couldn't get up here to see it, and then when I began a blog, less than 5 months ago, it really took off as a hobby. Only lately have I realized that I really love it and want to develop this passion further... it's so amazing to see all the great work being done out there!

Your photos are lovely. :) Unlike you, I've never been into the black and white much. For me it is all about trying to capture a hint of the lingering magic of a moment, the spirit-infused beauty of the world we walk in.

I especifically desire the tone of the shell photo, it really is awesome. The blue morning glory is also terrific but i also want that color to be planted in my garden. We have the violets, yellows and whites but not the blue! Oh how i wish to have them here. Thanks for those at least my eyes are pacified.

Hum, interesting question, Kiki, and as always, thought provoking ... one of your sharing gifts, drawing us all in. I too was late coming into the digital era but when I did, like all my passions, went 'hog wild'! I kept scrapbooks as a child and also gardened/cooked beside my mother ... books, also a passion ... macro photography seems a favorites these days and still adore B/W (my daughter carries my passions ... not so in the garden ... and have spent great times in classes and on photo shoots together).

Hi Kiki - wonderful posts - great pics!!!! For me a camera has always been part of our life, dad loved photography, altho didn't do much with it as we grew up .... digital has really expanded my vision and creativity, maybe because you can experiment endlessly .... I'm passionate about photgraphy, everyone asks "where's your baby"? aka as my camera (not my son?! hehe!) I love how photgrpahy has opened my eyes to view beauty absolutely everywhere - hence I take macros, landscapes, people, architecture, scenery... whatever appeals!

Very good question. I started taking photo in earnest when digital became affordable about 5 or 6 years ago, although my camera was a cheapy that I no longer use. My garden and wildflowers were my main focus. THEN about 3 years ago, I started a garden blog to share my photos.

Sorry to say, I didn't like the competitiveness among garden bloggers who seemed more interested in how may people they could lure to their blogs than in anything else. So I abandoned that blog.

NOW, I'm having a blast sharing my photos of Ontario. And I'm meeting tons of great people from around the world!

Gorgeous photos! I schlepped around a big 35mm film camera for many a year and it was quite the love/hate relationship. My hobby was wildflower photos on mountain trails. When I made the shift to a pocket digital camera it was like a whole new world had opened up for me. I'm not a very good photographer but Photoshop helps my cause! :D

So I guess you've answered my question about your photography. I'm enjoying your blog. I have to say so many of the blogs I've visited are focused on children or portraits, of just landscapes, and yours has been a breathe of fresh air. I so love your photos, i hope i can get such great shots one day. I've been in front of a camera for years and taken snapshots, but no further. The one time i tried to learn about a camera, my dad gave me one of his old ones but the aperture wasn't working, so that was that! Anyway to make a long story even longer, once i started blogging and saw all these awesome photos that was it. I picked up a camera read a couple of tips and i was hooked. one day i'll actually learn....but right now i'm just having fun with the photos. i want them to tell our family's story, with a sense of humour.
