I have seen these amazing woodpeckers. There are some in my neighborhood that I always keep an eye out for. I worked at a Wildlife rehab center for 6 years (as a raptor handler/educator and in the hospital) and we cared for an injured one once and happily re- released him. They are surprisingly large and have a beautiful and intelligent presence. Birds speak to us in so many ways!
The woodpeckers I have seen in the Western Cape(SA) are smallish birds with blue colouring - very, very pretty and I love to hear the sound of them pecking away on the hollow trunk of a tree. Birds are such wonderful creatures providing us with hours of pleasure if we take the time to watch and listen. Each one that visits my garden is a gift. I never tire of the thrill their visits, however fleeting they may be.
Thank you for another inspired post, Victoria!
Kiki that was an amazing post !
I have never read anything like it about wood peckers and how powerful there spirits are.
We actually had one in the back garden that had pecked out so many holes in our Mountain Ash it was startling because I NEVER saw the bird doing it .. so seeing all of the holes I thought the worst .. that some horrible "bug" was killing our tree .. but the other bloggers identified the holes for what they were and I was stunned!
Now reading .. well I think I am happy to have had the presence in my garden now .. and the tree is fine : )

I don't think we have woodpeckers here? I wish we did - they sound wonderful...my garden is visited by the kookaburras - I love their unique call...also a healing symbol...ooh, and I musn't forget the beautiful owls also - isn't nature wonderful?
Beautiful post KiKi! This is such a extraordinary bird. You have spectacular captures here and wonderful thoughts to go with them. ;>)
Hi Kiki, You have honoured one of my favourite birds! :)
The Pileated Woodpecker is the king in our local ravine. They often fly into our neighbourhood and knock on the telephone poles in the back lane behind our house. I sometimes stand at the top of the lookout point over the ravine and see them fly over the treetops. I am dazzled by them. Thank you for the lovely post! :)
Kiki, yes, we've encountered the Pileated Woodpecker! Amazing creatures! You do NOT want to get under a tree where they are pecking because they often send down very large pieces of bark! LOL! In a nearby town, some residents found one on the ground that had been attacked by a cat. It was still alive so they took it to an animal shelter and they were able to nurture it back to health. The sound of them pecking is something to hear for sure!
Hugs, Diane
For the first time I saw two of these creatures at once a few trees apart. They are stunning. I also love the sound of their flight.
I have seen these, but none lately. The smaller ones have been enjoying the suet feeders here the past couple of weeks.
You do not want to get under a tree on which are hierarchical, as they often send large chunks of bark. Birds are wonderful creatures that are providing hours of fun if you take the time to look and listen.
